Much of New Zealand’s rail network passes through stunning scenery. However many of the most scenic lines are just used by freight trains so the scenery is hidden to visitors.  Great New Zealand Steam Journeys was created to work with the premier steam preservation groups to ensure their beautifully restored steam locomotives are able to take you along the most scenic passenger and freight lines in New Zealand.

This means you can now fully enjoy the romance and adventure of the bygone steam era, while travelling through some of the world’s most stunning scenery.

You can choose to take a 19 day/18 night journey through the whole of Aotearoa/New Zealand or take a shorter journey just through the North or South Island.  Alternatively should you wish to incorporate a  steam train journey into your New Zealand holiday, we can arrange for you to join the journey at any point along the way. 

The trains travel at a leisurely pace during the day and only travel for 2 to 3 hours at a time.  You can select from a very wide range of sightseeing excursions along the way before heading off to explore the local attractions.  Some excursion options are specifically designed for railways enthusiasts but you always have flexibility throughout the journey to pick and choose as you go.
