Fjordland National Park
As a National Park in a World Heritage area, Fjordland’s scenery never fails to enthral travellers. Its deep fjords and sheer mountains were carved out by glaciers in the dawn of time. Ancient rainforests cloak the snow capped mountainsides and valleys while waterfalls tumble hundreds of metres into shimmering lakes. A scene unchanged for thousands of years which also impressed the first Maori explorers who have many legends of its formation. Take it all in with a scenic flight by floatplane or helicopter. Embark on kayaking tours or tramp for a day, a week or a month on well known walks. Divers can discover rare black corals growing just beneath the water’s surface. Cruises get up close and personal to the tumbling waterfalls and you may spot some of the locals as well – fur seals and Fjordland crested penguins. If time allows, take an overnight cruise on Milford Sound – but book early!
