The Coromandel

‹‹ back to itinerary

Coromandel map

For Kiwis, the Coromandel is synonymous with New Zealand’s beach/holiday culture.  It has long been a hideaway of artists and musicians, drawn to its lush forests, and more than 400 km of idyllic coastline.  Hence, open studios, craft shops and charming colonial architecture feature around the region.  The intrepid, venturing along the numerous walking tracks, will discover relics of the Peninsula’s gold rush days, logging dams and ancient Maori pa sites.   The Coromandel is most famous for its beaches, with evocative names such as Cathedral Cove and Sailors Grave, or the ever popular Hot Water Beach, where you can create your own hot pool by simply digging into the sands.

Highlights:

  •  The Coromandel Crimson Trail, summer blooming of Pohutukawa Trees
  • Cathedral Cove – a real jewel and accessible by sea kayak, boat or on foot
  • Arty Coromandel town with the unique and ‘steep’ Driving Creek Railway
  • Hot Water Beach – Dig a hole for your own hot water spa – make sure it’s not too hot!
  • Take a sea fishing charter out into Mercury Bay.
