The Sunshine Coast

Explore the beautiful Sunshine Coast of Western Canada. This relatively short stretch of coast north of Vancouver is often overlooked, but with an intriguing coastline, accessed by ferry and welcoming communities, it is a lovely alternative to visiting Vancouver Island.

Day 6: Lund

Day 9: Lund to Powell River/Comox
From Lund you drive to Powell River – stop off here to explore and shop for carvings, pottery, jewellery and weaving before taking the ferry crossing to Comox on Vancouver Island. Possible extension ideas

  • Discovery Coast Passage – On selected days only, and through the summer months from June to September, BC Ferries offer sailings from Port Hardy to Bella Coola. For the adventurous traveller, the drive from Bella Coola to Williams is a must. The wild rivers of the Caribou Mountains provide incomparable wildlife viewing; we can arrange for you to stay in a ranch or lodge in the heart of this area.
  • Grizzly bears in their natural habitat provide a wondrous and memorable experience for all ages and there is no better place than the floating lodge at Knight Inlet. Fly in by floatplane from Campbell River for your choice of duration from one night upwards – but beware, however many nights your budget will allow will doubtless be too short!
  • Drive up to Port Hardy and from here take the ferry service to Prince Rupert. Although a ferry adequately describes the vessel on which you will sail, the scenery before you will rival any – the Inside Passage to Northern BC will delight all, with regular sightings of Whales from the ship. The ferry must be pre-booked well in advance, especially if you plan to take your hire car. Alternatively, travel as a foot passenger, and connect with the train from Prince Rupert to Prince George or Jasper. We will advise on options to fit with your plans
  • Return via the Sunshine Coast to the mountain town of Whistler, and from here explore further inland. The Chilcotin Ranges and Cariboo Plateau are within a few hours drive of Whistler – or from here connect onto the Rocky Mountaineer route to Quesnel and Jasper
