World Lion Day

August 10 was World Lion Day and it is worth taking stock on how these magnificent animals are doing in the wild.  With Cecil the lion, and his untimely death showed, many people around the world hold lion in deep affection.

The current situation is a mixture of good and bad news.  To deal with the bad first, the number of  lion in Western, Central and East Africa have decreased by 60% over the past 21 years. However the better news is that their numbers have  increased by 12% over the same period in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

It is encouraging that Rwanda realises the value of having lion in its National Parks and has re-introduced 15 lion to their Akagera National Park – the last time lion were seen here was 15 years ago.

The King of the Jungle needs all the friends it can get.  If you want to discuss seeing these beautiful animals in their natural habitat just get in touch.

We have lots of ideas on how to incorporate this into your own bespoke, tailor made holiday and many other places/parks that are a must visit on your trip.  We will also advise on the best time of year to visit and the length of time you need in each place therefore making the most of your time and money, whilst making the best memories!

On the first of September this year the Earth, Moon and Sun are aligning in the Quirimbas Archipelago, Mozambique for a spectacular and rare annular solar eclipse.  This will be a special event in that the moon doesn’t completely cover the sun and a ring of fire will be observed around the shadow.

It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for a select few guests to experience.

One of our favourite Lodges in the Quirimbas have put together an exciting safari to see this spectacle.

The five night package includes 2 nights at Ibo Island Lodge and 3 nights fly camping.  You will observe the eclipse from a remote island beach camp in style.

The safari portion will be run with a beautiful 12 meter dhow built to Arab designs with Mozambican skipper, crew and chef on board to whip up those seafood extravaganzas around the camp fire!  You don’t sleep on board – instead mobile camps are set up on various tropical islands and special spots.  You should be sailing in calm, clear and turquoise water with local white traditional dhow sails to break up the endless view on the horizon. Then experience the best view of the eclipse in the Quirimbas from one of the most remote and beautiful corners of our world.

There are only 12 places available (as we put this up) so you need to act fast if you want to join the safari as part of your bespoke, tailor made holiday.

We have just received news from the above Lodge that this year’s numbers of Polar Bears around the Lodge are the best they have ever known.  The best day they have had was 21 bears sighted between the Lodge and their whale swim point.  The ice pack, which was still visible a week ago, has now dispersed pushing the bears back on to the coastline.

Additionally all the bears are looking fit and healthy making for very special photo opportunities – especially when you have an expert on hand to help with how to make the most of your chances.

The other news from the lodge is that the Beluga whales are back in huge numbers as well.  Imagine jumping off the back of the Zodiac in a wet suit and snorkel and listening to the whales singing to you.  They even seem to answer your own attempts of singing to them!

As this a very special destination and places are limited you need to be getting in touch with us now to ensure you are there for next year’s spectacular.

For more information on the lodge or to make this part of your own bespoke, tailor made holiday please call us on Tel: 01323 446550 or email: info@experienceholidays.co.uk

One of the favourite holidays that are booked through Experience Holidays has to be a trip around Western Canada.  Some of our clients go back time after time.  It is a wonderful self drive destination giving you a great mixture of culture, wildlife, amazing scenery, hospitable people and easy driving.

Why not take a break on your journey and have a few days on a houseboat on the beautiful ShuswapLake, North Okanagan. About half way between Calgary and Vancouver it lends itself to taking a break with a difference. With sun drenched beaches, waterfalls and the comfort of home from home on the houseboat. You beach the craft where you fancy and step ashore to explore, go swimming or try your hand at fishing. Click here for info website.

For those wanting more energetic pursuits you can hire mountain bikes, water ski or even play a round of golf.

A wonderful way to take a break in the middle of your bespoke, tailor made tour.
